When to come, and what to expect.
A mile-high Sky Island with four gentle seasons.
The climate
At roughly 5,500 feet, Ramsey Canyon is cooler and greener than the desert below — a Sky Island with a spring-fed stream and real shade. Days are mild for southern Arizona and nights are cool year-round, so a layer for the evening is always a good idea. Even in summer, the canyon runs noticeably cooler than Tucson or Phoenix.
Season by season
Spring (Mar–May): warm days, cool nights, and the start of the hummingbird and migration season — one of the most popular times to visit. Book ahead.
Summer & monsoon (Jun–Sep): the canyon is at its liveliest. The North American monsoon brings dramatic afternoon thunderstorms (usually July–September) that green everything up; the hummingbird peak lands in mid-July through August. Carry rain protection and watch the skies on afternoon hikes.
Fall (Oct–Nov): quieter, clear, and comfortable, with lingering color along the creek — a lovely, relaxed time to come.
Winter (Dec–Feb): crisp and peaceful, with chilly nights and the occasional dusting of snow on the canyon. It's the off-season for hummingbirds (Anna's stays year-round), but a fine time for sparrows, raptors, and the Sandhill Cranes massing at nearby Whitewater Draw.
